Indoor Air Pollution

Worldwide, indoor air pollutants can be divided into four categories based on their derivation:

1. Pollutants from combustion (e.g., carbon monoxide, particulates, volatile organics, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides from cooking stoves, space heaters, and environmental tobacco smoke—ETS).

2. Pollutants from building materials, furnishings, and chemical products (e.g., pesticides, asbestos, and volatile organics including formaldehyde).

3. Pollutants originating from the ground under buildings (e.g., radon).

4. Pollutants from biological processes (e.g., mold, mildew, mites).
